We just want the option of taking 8 people if we need it. I looked at both the odyssey and pilot today side by side and definitely acknowledge the trunk space differences. I also have a mazda3 but I’m thinking of trading it in for the SUV because it’s too small with all the kids school stuff. I’ve had a Yukon XL before… it was huge and half the time it’s just me. A Suburban is bigger than I’d want for a daily driver. It’s only 8 when we take my MIL or the kids have friends. We are pretty minimalist and just pack a backpack each for going to the beach or to visit family when it’s all of us…. My kids hate camping so we just go when the kids are at their dad’s. If you're deadset on a crossover and not set on a Pilot or Highlander, as a real life example, a close friend of mine has a family that's 8-deep with two doggos, and they decided against upgrading from a van to a Suburban to getting a smaller crossover that works "most" of the time that was a better value for 99.9% of their needs and rents a larger van if they plan to travel together. Additionally, you mentioned in your post that this was for "rare" occassions and in a comment specifically for potentially camping trips, another thing to consider is the trunk space is limited compared to a minivan and even with a massive roof rack compartment it's a stretch to carry bags, equipment, gear, etc for 8 people. If you look at the rear seat configurations on the Highlander and Pilot (specifically the Pilot), there is little usable legroom and space even with the mid row seats adjusted. While something like a Pilot or Highlander have 8 passenger configurations, their third row is only meant for temporary use by small children on shorter trips while also having less cargo space than a minivan.
